Exa Websets vs Clay: Prospecting, Enrichment & Cost (2026)
Can Exa Websets replace Clay? Compare list building, contact enrichment, integrations and pricing, with worked costs for 100 prospects.
Which is better for your team: Exa Websets or Clay?
Exa Websets can replace Clay for a defined list-building and enrichment job. Both products find prospects, add custom research, and enrich contact information. Websets centers the work on a natural-language brief and criteria checks; Clay gives you configurable providers, waterfalls, and connected GTM workflows.
- Choose Websets when your starting point is a specific population, required fields, and a supported export.
- Choose Clay when provider control, recurring operations, CRM workflows, or native email sequencing drive the decision.
- Use both when Websets discovers a difficult account universe and Clay already runs the next steps.
Compare accepted prospects, contact freshness, operator effort, and total cost. Below, we separate new discovery from imported-list enrichment and show the credit arithmetic for 100 prospects.
Comparison table
| Prospecting job | Exa Websets | Clay |
|---|---|---|
| Discover a new list | Describe people or companies in natural language, confirm criteria, and let agents find matching entities. | Source people or companies, use AI research, and combine discovery with a configurable enrichment table. |
| Check account fit | Inspect the criteria each result met and the supporting sources. Required criteria filter discovery results. | Use Claygent, provider data, and conditional logic to research and qualify rows. |
| Enrich an existing list | Import URLs and add custom research or contact columns. Import-only enrichment can keep every resolved row. | Import rows or connect a source, then choose enrichment providers and run the relevant columns. |
| Find email and phone | Supports email and phone enrichment; each has its own credit charge. | Supports contact providers and multi-provider waterfalls; data cost depends on provider and settings. |
| Keep work recurring | Websets monitors can search for new matching items on a schedule. | Signals, recurring workflows, and CRM automation support ongoing GTM operations, with plan-dependent access. |
| Move results into outreach | CSV/API plus documented exports to CRM and email tools; Clay export uses a webhook. | Native email sequencing plus integrations and CRM workflows. Sending and CRM features depend on plan. |
| Control the process | Configure the population, criteria, and fields; inspect the resulting evidence. | Choose providers, waterfall order, research steps, and workflow conditions. |
Feature comparison
What is Exa Websets, and why compare it with Clay?
Exa Websets is a workspace for finding, verifying, and enriching collections of people, companies, and other web entities. You describe a population, confirm criteria, and add columns for the information you need. A result can expose its summary, matched criteria, and supporting sources. Websets also has an API, but this comparison is about the list-building product and its workflows. Websets dashboard guide.
Clay also builds and enriches prospect lists. Its distinguishing choice is how much of the process you configure: data sources, research columns, provider waterfalls, conditions, and downstream actions. Both can perform custom research and contact enrichment. The useful decision is how much control your workflow needs and how much work remains before a rep can use the output. Clay pricing.
Job 1: Find companies that fit a specific ICP
Example brief: Find US B2B software companies with a published healthcare customer story. Return the company domain, the customer-story URL, and a short explanation of the fit.
In Websets, turn the must-have requirements into criteria and add the customer-story URL as an enrichment. Review the matching evidence before exporting. In Clay, source candidate accounts and use research columns and conditions to check the same requirements. Websets is worth evaluating when the brief itself is the starting point; Clay is worth evaluating when discovery must fit an established data and operations workflow.
Keep company discovery and contact discovery separate. A correct account does not establish that a particular person currently works there. Neither product should get credit for a usable prospect until the required company and person checks pass.
Job 2: Enrich a list you already have
Websets can import company or person URLs and populate research fields without discovering a new population. Its documentation distinguishes import-only enrichment, scoped search that qualifies imported entities, and workflows that combine imports with new discovery. Import-only mode keeps resolved rows; qualification can exclude rows that fail criteria. Websets import workflows.
Clay lets you select data providers and combine them with AI research and workflow conditions. That control is useful when you already know which sources perform well for your region or want a specific fallback order. Bringing your own provider API key changes the bill: Clay Actions and the provider's external charges still need to be counted. Clay Actions and Data Credits.
Job 3: Hand a usable list to your sales team
Websets documents People exports to Salesforce Leads, HubSpot Contacts, Instantly, Smartlead, and Lemlist. It can export any entity type into Clay through a webhook. These are specific export paths; they do not establish continuous two-way CRM synchronization. Websets integrations.
Clay has its own email sequencer as well as integrations. If your comparison includes outreach, account for the native sending workflow, plan access, and any additional tools rather than assuming Clay stops at enrichment. Clay Sequencer.
When can Websets replace Clay?
- Evaluate Websets as a replacement when the work is a defined research list, a set of custom fields, and a supported export. Test whether its contact coverage and matching evidence meet your requirements.
- Keep Clay in the evaluation when specific providers, waterfall order, CRM lifecycle rules, or connected recurring workflows are requirements.
- Use both when Websets finds a difficult population and Clay supplies a workflow you already operate. Export Websets rows into a Clay webhook and measure the combined cost and maintenance.
Websets and Exa Agent: a current product note
Exa's Websets API quickstart recommends Exa Agent for new list-building or enrichment workflows and retains Websets guidance for maintaining and extending existing integrations. This is guidance about where to start a new integration; it does not establish a Websets shutdown. Websets credits and Search API credits are separate. Websets API quickstart.
Pricing comparison
Prices checked October 15, 2026. Websets uses its own credit balance. Clay meters platform Actions separately from Data Credits used for data and AI. The credit counts are not interchangeable.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing equivalent | Included usage and practical limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Websets Starter | $49/month | Not included in this comparison | 8,000 credits/month; 100 results and 10 enrichments per Webset; 2 seats; 2 concurrent searches. |
| Websets Pro | $449/month | Not included in this comparison | 100,000 credits/month; 1,000 results and 50 enrichments per Webset; 10 seats; 5 concurrent searches. |
| Clay Launch | From $185/month | From $167/month, billed annually | Minimum 15,000 Actions and 2,500 Data Credits/month; annual base allocation is 180,000 Actions and 30,000 Data Credits. |
| Clay Growth | From $495/month | From $446/month, billed annually | Minimum 40,000 Actions and 6,000 Data Credits/month; annual base allocation is 480,000 Actions and 72,000 Data Credits. |

Worked example: 100 prospects with email, phone, and three research fields
This is credit arithmetic, not a measured product test. Assume 100 matching people are discovered, or 100 supplied person URLs resolve in import-only mode; every requested field returns; and no previews, refreshes, additional searches, or qualification operations are added.
| Component | Discover 100 new matching people | Import-only: 100 resolved person URLs |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery or import | 100 × 10 = 1,000 credits | 100 × 2 = 200 credits |
| Work emails | 100 × 5 = 500 credits | 100 × 5 = 500 credits |
| Phone numbers | 100 × 5 = 500 credits | 100 × 5 = 500 credits |
| Three standard research enrichments | 100 × 3 × 2 = 600 credits | 100 × 3 × 2 = 600 credits |
| Total modeled Websets usage | 2,600 credits | 1,800 credits |
The rate card charges 10 credits per search result matching all criteria, 5 per email or phone, 2 per row for other enrichments, and 2 per resolved imported result. Nonmatching search results cost 0 credits. Both examples fit the Starter credit allowance; new discovery is still subject to its 100-result Webset limit. The 8,000-credit allowance is not 8,000 enriched prospects. Websets billing and credit costs.
These totals do not include a company-to-person discovery step. If you start with company URLs and need to find a buyer, add that work. Applying search criteria to an import is also a different configuration from import-only enrichment; the 1,800-credit illustration should not be used as its full bill.
For Clay, price the configured columns. Record the Actions estimate and Data Credit estimate for the same people and fields, plus any external provider charges. A fallback waterfall and a single-provider lookup are different jobs. We have not run that matched Clay table, so there is no defensible fixed Clay credit total or winner for this example. Clay Actions and Data Credits.
For a real comparison, calculate cost per accepted prospect = attributable workflow spend ÷ prospects passing every required check. Show the subscription commitment and unused allowance separately. Also record setup and correction time; a low cost per returned row can hide a large review task.

Bloomberry's first-person Clay alternatives review includes Websets screenshots and reports useful company results alongside some people who had recently changed jobs. That is the author's experience, not a measured error rate for your segment.
What makes a prospect list usable?
- The company passes every must-have criterion, with an inspectable source.
- The person currently holds the required role at the correct company.
- Required research fields are supported; missing values remain visible.
- Email verification status is recorded. A returned address is not proof of deliverability, and a returned phone is not proof of ownership.
- The exported record has the fields and identifiers the next workflow needs.
Test new discovery and existing-list enrichment separately using the same briefs, required fields, and acceptance rules. Record requested, returned, and accepted rows; missing fields; manual corrections; elapsed and operator time; credits; and the export result. For Clay, record the selected providers, AI settings, and fallback order so another operator can reproduce the setup.

Frequently asked questions
Is Exa Websets a Clay alternative?
Yes, for overlapping list-building, qualification, custom research, and contact-enrichment jobs. It may cover a defined research-and-export workflow without Clay. Provider selection, recurring CRM workflows, and downstream execution can make Clay or a combined setup a better fit.
Is Websets the same as the Exa Search API?
No. Websets builds collections with criteria checks and enrichment fields through a dashboard or API. Exa Search is a separate retrieval product. Websets and Search API credits are separate; compare Websets plans rather than API request prices. See the Websets API quickstart.
Can Exa Websets enrich an existing list?
Yes. Import company or person URLs and add enrichment fields. Import-only enrichment, scoped qualification, and discovery expansion are different configurations with different work involved. See the Websets import workflows.
Does Websets find emails and phone numbers?
Yes. Both are documented enrichment types, with a published charge of 5 credits per email or phone. Check coverage, current-role accuracy, and verification status on your own segment. See Websets billing and credit costs.
What do 100 enriched prospects cost in Websets?
Under the assumptions above, 100 new matching people with an email, phone, and three standard research fields use 2,600 credits. Import-only enrichment of 100 resolved person URLs with those fields uses 1,800 credits. These are modeled usage totals; the subscription, plan limits, and additional operations still apply.
Can I use Websets and Clay together?
Yes. Websets documents exporting rows into Clay through a webhook. The receiving Clay account must support that workflow. Treat this as an export into a table rather than assuming automatic two-way synchronization. See Websets integrations.
Does Clay include email outreach?
Yes. Clay has a native email sequencer as well as integrations. Check the current plan and sending requirements for your workflow. See Clay Sequencer.
Does AI-verified mean every result is correct?
No independent accuracy guarantee follows from that label. Websets documents checking results against your criteria and showing supporting sources. Review current employment, field-level evidence, missing values, and contact verification separately.
Is Exa replacing Websets with Agent?
Exa currently recommends Agent for new list-building and enrichment integrations, while retaining Websets documentation and published plans. The quickstart guidance does not establish a Websets shutdown. See the Websets API quickstart.
